Are epoxy floors slippery when wet?
Some epoxy floors are slippery when wet, and some are not. A smooth, high gloss coating with nothing in it can get slick under water, oil or melting snow. A quartz sand epoxy floor has aggregate in the surface that gives texture and grip, and factory testing lists a slip coefficient of 0.4 or higher.
That does not mean any floor is grip proof when it is wet. Here is what actually controls traction, what to expect from your tires, and how to set up your floor so it stays safe.
Why some epoxy floors feel slick
Most of the "epoxy is slippery" stories come from smooth coatings. When the surface is flat and glossy, there is nothing for a shoe sole or tire to bite into, and a thin film of water sits right on top.
Flake floors sit in the middle. Decorative vinyl chips are broadcast into the coating for a speckled look, but the result is still a fairly smooth surface. We break down the differences in quartz epoxy vs flake floor.
Our system is different on purpose. The indoor quartz sand epoxy kit is a two part bisphenol A epoxy with quartz sand aggregate. The aggregate gives the floor a textured stone look and more grip underfoot.
What the slip number means
Factory testing on our quartz sand epoxy lists a slip coefficient of 0.4 or higher. A higher number means more resistance to slipping. We give you that number straight, along with the honest caveat: real world slip resistance still varies with three things.
- How the aggregate is spread. Even coverage gives even grip. Bare patches feel smoother.
- Contaminants. Oil, coolant, soap residue and fine dust make any floor slicker.
- Wet conditions. Standing water reduces traction on every hard surface, including concrete.
So yes, the texture helps a lot. No, it is not a license to run across a flooded floor in socks.
Does an epoxy garage floor make car tires skid?
This is the second half of the question we hear most. On a quartz sand floor, tires roll on a textured surface instead of a smooth glossy film, so there is something for the rubber to grip. That is a big part of why people choose quartz for garages.
Where tires can lose traction is the same place they lose it on bare concrete: water dripping off the car, a puddle of oil, or coolant on the floor. A few habits handle it:
- Pull in slowly on rainy or snowy days, when the car brings water in with it.
- Wipe spills right away. Use a degreaser on oil.
- Keep grit swept up. Loose sand acts like ball bearings under shoes and also scratches the finish. See how to remove scratches from an epoxy floor.
- Respect the cure. Light foot traffic at 24 hours, full cure at 72 hours, and wait about 5 days before driving on it. Water exposure should wait 7 days.
How to get the most grip during install
Traction is built on install day. Follow our installation guide and pay extra attention to these steps:
- Use full coverage. 1 kit covers 100 sq ft at about one eighth inch. A 1 car garage at about 200 sq ft takes 2 kits, a 2 car garage at about 400 sq ft takes 4 kits, and a 2.5 car garage at about 500 sq ft takes 5 kits. Never stretch coverage; a thin coat will not level properly.
- Spread in sections. Start in the far corner and work toward the door with the 22 inch squeegee. Work in 100 to 150 sq ft sections, overlap 4 to 6 inches and keep a wet edge.
- Distribute the quartz aggregate evenly right after pouring. This is the single biggest factor in uniform grip. Do not leave bare spots.
- Defoam while wet. Go over each area with the 20 inch defoaming roller, 2 to 3 slow passes at 50% overlap.
- Prep first. Grind the floor to a texture like 60 grit sandpaper and vacuum all dust. Good prep keeps the coating bonded so the textured surface stays put.
A typical job is a weekend: prep and prime day one, pour day two. If you are on the fence about doing it yourself, read can you epoxy your own garage floor.
Keep it grippy with the right cleaning
Soap film and residue are quiet traction killers. Sweep or dust mop as needed, and mop weekly with a pH neutral cleaner in warm water. Avoid vinegar, citrus, bleach and harsh solvents. Rinse well so nothing is left on the surface. Our full routine is in how to clean an epoxy garage floor.
What about outdoor and wet areas?
Do not use the indoor kit for patios, driveways, pool decks or anywhere in direct sun. It lacks strong UV protection, and bisphenol A epoxy can amber over time in direct sunlight.
Outdoor jobs use the outdoor washed stone quartz epoxy kit at $229, covering up to 100 sq ft per kit. The washed stone finish lets water pass through rather than sit on top. It is not a waterproofing membrane, so over a basement or living space you need a separate waterproofing layer.
The honest bottom line
Smooth epoxy can be slick when wet. Quartz sand epoxy is built with texture and grip, with a factory tested slip coefficient of 0.4 or higher, but no floor is immune to oil and standing water. Spread the aggregate evenly, keep it clean and wipe spills fast. For more on the tradeoffs, read the disadvantages of epoxy flooring.

Quick answers
Are epoxy floors slippery when wet?
A smooth, glossy epoxy can be slick when wet. A quartz sand epoxy floor has texture from the aggregate, and factory testing lists a slip coefficient of 0.4 or higher, but water, oil and how evenly the aggregate is spread all affect grip.
Will my tires skid on an epoxy garage floor?
The quartz aggregate gives tires a textured surface to grip. Water, oil and coolant on any floor reduce traction, so wipe spills right away and drive slowly when the floor is wet.
Can I add more grip to an epoxy floor?
Grip comes from the quartz aggregate, so spreading it evenly right after the pour is what matters. On an existing floor, call us to talk through your options before adding anything.
Can I use the indoor kit on a patio or pool deck?
No. The indoor kit lacks strong UV protection. Outdoor jobs use the outdoor washed stone kit, which lets water pass through instead of pooling on top.
